Great gift ideas

Maybe you're looking for a special gift to give a knitter, or maybe you're a knitter looking for something special to put on your wish list.  Either way, we have some ideas for you!

Local potter Knox Steinbrecher's yarn bowls have been very popular gifts the past few holiday seasons, and we're pleased to be carrying them again this year.  Knox brought us a dozen of these beauties fresh out of the kiln yesterday.  They're available in three lovely glazes--dark blue, light blue, and pale green with a leaf pattern. Settle into your favorite chair with your knitting or crocheting, and keep the yarn bowl by your side.  The bowl keeps your yarn ball contained so it won't roll away, while the slot in the bowl prevents the yarn from tangling.  Even when not in use, these yarn bowls make a gorgeous addition to any home decor.  The yarn bowls are priced at $32 each.

As every knitter knows, even when we think we have needles in every size, eventually we discover we're missing the one we need for our next project.  It's frustrating, and the cost of buying more needles can quickly add up.  With the Addi Click system, you'll always have a wide range of sizes at your fingertips.  We currently have three sets in stock: one each of the Turbo, the Lace tips, and the Long Lace tips.

Each set includes interchangeable needle tips and cords in a wide range of sizes and lengths, all contained in a compact case.  Click here for an in-depth comparison of what sizes and lengths come with each different version of set so you can choose the one that's right for you.

All three of these versions of the Addi Clicks are priced the same, $170.  The Addi Click system is a great investment that will save you lots of money in the long run, and bring you the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have the right needle for just about any project!

Kauni Effektgarn

No doubt many of you have seen Kauni yarn on Ravelry or elsewhere and have been stunned by what it can do.  Kauni Effecktgarn is a sportweight, Shetland-type wool with long color gradations.  And...(drum roll)...it's now available here at Sheepish!

This yarn is perfect for adventurous knitters who love watching yarn colors change as they knit.  Many people like to combine multi-colored Kauni with a solid for dramatic colorwork effects. With that in mind, we have the solid black Kauni so you can play around with working a multi over a solid background.

Nordic Hats photo via Ruth Sørensen

Ruth Sørensen's Nordic Hats booklet is also now in stock. It includes many options for colorwork hats using Kauni, plus templates for creating your own colorwork designs. And if you need more inspiration, just check out some of these incredible colorwork projects Ravelers have made with this yarn.

For those of you who aren't into colorwork, Effektgarn's long color changes also work beautifully for other kinds of projects, especially shawls and wraps (*cough* Wingspan *cough*).  This yarn just has so many exciting possibilities!

Kauni yarns are sold by weight in balls ranging from 140 grams ($27.50 for about 600 yards) to 160 grams ($31.00 for about 700 yards).  We currently have 10 colorways of the Effektgarn in stock, plus the solid black ($25 for 150 grams/660 yards).

We can't wait to see what kinds of fantastic projects you'll will make with Kauni!

Ravelry in-store pattern service

One of the most challenging parts about running a LYS is deciding which patterns to carry.  It's difficult to predict what kinds of patterns customers will want in any given season.  We want to offer you a wide variety of things to choose from, but we don't want to end up having to put a lot of unsold patterns on clearance.

Well, today we're pleased to announce that we've teamed up with Ravelry to offer you a wider variety of pattern choices than ever!   That means thousands of patterns from participating designers are now available for purchase here at Sheepish, on demand.

Just a few of the patterns you can now buy at Sheepish.

Here's how it works: let's say you see the model of the Flyaway Vest that's hanging on our wall and decide you want the pattern.  We'll pull it up on our Ravelry shop page and with a couple of clicks, boom! Ravelry will send the pattern .pdf to your email and/or your Ravelry library.*

We'll ring up your pattern like any other merchandise, so you can buy your yarn, needles, pattern, and notions all at once.  So convenient!  If you're a member of our rewards program, these pattern purchases will count toward your rewards total.  And you can feel good about supporting your local yarn shop and independent designers.  EVERYBODY WINS.

We're really excited about being able to offer this service for our customers and hoping it will be very useful for you all.

*For a small fee, we can also print the pattern for you here in the shop.

Dream Club: December

Just look at this gorgeous color! Of all the Dream Club yarns we've received so far, this is probably our favorite.

The yarn is Perfectly Posh Fingering, a luxurious, lofty single ply of wool, cashmere, silk, and mohair.  It comes in a 360-yard skein and, being the exclusive yarn of the month, includes the exclusive pattern of the month.  This lacy wrap from designer Kay Dahlquist is called Seychelles. It's a basic rectangle shape that fastens with two buttons and can be worn a couple of different ways.

The pattern comes as a free PDF when you purchase the yarn ($36).  Remember, as always, quantities of this special Dream Club yarn are limited!  And don't feel limited by the pattern--this yarn would also make a fantastic cowl or scarf.  Just saying. :)

Sheepish holiday update

For those of you not on our email list, here is the message Carrie sent out yesterday:

Greetings Sheepish fans! It's been a long time since we've sent an update and a lot has been going on at the shop. We are in the midst of our busiest time of year, and to complicate matters Sheepish has learned that we are being forced out of our current location. It is not our choice to leave, but regardless we are going to find ourselves without a home come the middle of January.

Sheepish is at a crossroads and we need you to help us determine our next steps.

Is having a local yarn store something that is important to you?

We know more and more people are buying their yarn online . These days you can even find yarn supplies on Amazon. We'd like to think that buying yarn is a tactile experience—the colors, softness, and even the smell is just not something you can substitute.

Sometimes yarn may cost less online, but it's usually less than a 50¢ difference. That extra 50¢ goes to put a roof over our head, to pay employees that wind your yarn and answer your questions, and to provide a place for knitters to come and find a sense of community. We'd like to think that these tangible things are important to everyone and not just us.

We would like to know how YOU feel about having a local yarn store to help us to make this important decision concerning the future of Sheepish. It may seem like we're fishing for compliments, but we honestly need to know if you support us to determine whether or not it's worthwhile for us to move and start over. Please take a minute to give us some feedback—call, email, come by—we WANT to hear from you!

No matter what happens, we WILL be here through the holidays and we hope to see you! Come visit us and let us help you pick out your next project—we've got gift ideas that knit up quick and easy. It's also the perfect time to learn a new skill—book a class on anything you want for only $25 for an hour of one-on-one.

Dream Club: October

October's installment from Dream in Color's Dream Club is available now, and it's another lovely one.

This month's yarn is Merino/Silk Sock, a deliciously squishy blend of 75% U.S. domestic merino and 25% silk. The colorway is a beautiful autumnal mix of rusty golds and greens.  A 440-yard skein retails for $30.00.

October 2012 Dream Club yarn

In case you're just joining us, here's how the Dream Club works: each month we get a shipment of ten skeins of yarn from Dream in Color in an exclusive colorway.  With the purchase of the Dream Club yarn, you get the PDF of the pattern of the month.  This month, it's the Autumn Fern Mobius, designed by Jessica Correa.

Autumn Fern Mobius

Remember, both the yarn and the pattern are Dream Club exclusives, and you must buy the yarn to get the pattern. Don't miss out--get yours soon!

P.S. In case you missed it, we still have a few skeins left of September's Dream Club yarn, too!

More Shop Hopping

Here we go--the home stretch of Shop Hop 2012!  Just a reminder that we have extended hours this weekend, so we're open 10:00AM - 7:00PM Saturday and 11:00AM - 6:00PM Sunday.  Make sure you turn your passport in at any participating shop by the end of business Sunday.  And if you haven't already, don't forget to fill out your name and contact info on your passport!  How sad would it be if we drew yours for a prize, but had no idea who you were?

For those who haven't seen it yet, here's the complimentary pattern we're giving away during Shop Hop.

Heart? Four-leaf clover? Both!

This square would make a lovely pillow, don't you think?  How about a security blanket for a baby or toddler?  Or you could make a bunch of them and sew them together as an afghan.  One customer told us she wanted to make it out of a fine linen and use it as a washcloth.  So many possibilities!  Carrie worked really hard on writing this pattern, so we're glad to see that it's gotten such a positive response.

Thanks for making the sixth annual Shop Hop a success.  We hope you all have been having as much fun as we have!

  • Needle Felting book by Linda Lenich and Jennifer Kooy Zoeterman

Party for Samira

Samira has been a regular at Sheepish since way back before we were Sheepish.  And through all the years we've known her, she's been working hard toward her Ph.D.  This year, we knew her dissertation defense was approaching, so a bunch of our Tuesday night regulars (and staff) decided to make her a graduation gift.

Well, Samira had her defense last week.  And this week, we celebrated.

Cake!  (Not shown: champagne!)

And we gave her the gift.

Cozy!

That's 35 squares, knit with love and assembled into a special afghan we hope Samira will enjoy for a long, long time.

She seems to like it. :)

Times like this remind us that Sheepish is so much more than just a yarn shop.  For those of us who work here, and for our regulars (especially the Tuesday night crowd), it's also a community.  We're proud to say that many of our customers have also become our friends.

Congratulations, Dr. Mehta!

Shop Hop prizes, part two

Shop Hop starts tomorrow!  Are you excited?  We sure are!

Here's a sneak peek at another one of the prize packs we'll be giving away.  This basket of goodies focuses on spinning.  If you've been thinking about giving this craft a whirl (haha), this just might be the perfect opportunity!  The spinning prize pack includes:

  • Top whirl spindle by Louet
  • High Whirling: A Spinner's Guide To An Old World Skill book by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts

The retail value of this prize package is over $80.

Remember, you don't have to visit all nine participating Shop Hop shops to win a prize.  Even if you only get your passport stamped at one shop, you'll still be entered into the drawing for lots of great prizes like this one.  But if you do get all nine stamps on your passport, you'll be eligible for the  Grand Prize--$100 in store credit to each participating shop.  That's $900 to spend on yarn, books, needles, patterns, whatever!

If you haven't picked up your passport yet, you can still get yours during the Shop Hop for only a buck.  We're looking forward to seeing lots of you during the Hop!

Wednesday's Child

Today we hosted a crew from Fox 5 News as they shot a segment for their weekly Wednesday's Child feature.  Each week, Wednesday's Child spotlights a child living in foster care who is looking for a permanent adoptive family.

The segments are shot in various locations around town, depending on the featured child's interests. Fifteen-year-old Ashley loves to crochet and knit, so Fox 5 contacted us about doing her feature here at Sheepish.  We were excited to be able to be a part of this program!

Ashley is already quite an accomplished knitter, but she wanted help with her bind-off skills, so Carrie gave her a quick lesson.

Fox 5 anchor Amanda Davis interviewed Ashley about her hobbies and her hopes for the future.  After high school, Ashley wants to go to college to study architecture.

We had a great time with Ashley, Amanda, and the Fox 5 crew.  The segment will air sometime in October.  We'll keep you posted so you can tune in!

Bear Creek yarn

Here's another great new yarn from Kraemer, the folks who brought you Perfection Worsted.  Bear Creek is a very loosely spun wool, almost like a pencil roving.  But unlike some loosely spun yarns that pull apart when you work with them, Bear Creek is wrapped with a fine nylon thread that holds the strand together and gives it a wonderful texture.

We have ten fabulous colors in stock:

Top Row, L-R: Berry Blast, Peach Cobbler, Blueberry Pie, Peppermint Stick, Grapevine.  Bottom Row, L-R: Orchid, Snickerdoodle, Black Licorice, Kiwi Ice, Pepper Pot.

This yarn is an ideal choice for those times when you need to whip up a project in a hurry.  It calls for a size 17 needle, with a gauge of 2 stitches per inch, so a little goes a long way.  Each skein has 130 yards and retails at $19.00/skein.  Stacy knit this Super Bulky Button Hat (free Ravelry download) in just a few hours, and used less than half a skein!

Bear Creek Button Hat in Peppermint Stick

By the way, this hat pattern is perfect for showcasing our wonderful handmade buttons from Gail Hughes.

Resin button created by Kentucky artist Gail Hughes

The hat was knit on a size 13 needle, creating a wonderfully cozy, squishy fabric.  Stacy reports, "I really enjoyed knitting with Bear Creek, and I don't normally knit with anything this thick.  But this was a pleasure!"

Fall shipment from Brown Sheep

The day we receive our fall shipment from Brown Sheep is always one of the most exciting days of the year.  Yesterday was that day:

Brown Sheep goodness!

We would have posted a picture of this yesterday, but we were too busy being up to our necks in FIVE HUGE BOXES of yarn.  There was much rearranging, inventorying, price stickering, and re-rearranging to be done.  But now we're stocked to the ceiling with fall/winter favorites Lamb's Pride Bulky, Burly Spun, and Nature Spun Worsted--yippee!

Ty-Dy Superkid

Now in stock: Ty-Dy Superkid, one of the newest yarns from Knit One Crochet Too.  This is for all you mohair lovers out there who've been looking for a multi-colored mohair option.

Colors L-R: Berry Patch, Magenta Moss, Berries, Oceana

Ty-Dy Superkid is listed as a laceweight, and it's 35% kid mohair/21% wool/44% nylon. The yardage is generous (246/ball) and the price is very reasonable ($9.00/ball).  This yarn has fairly long color repeats that create a striping effect.

With its fine gauge, Ty-Dy Superkid is obviously great for lace projects, but you can also hold it together with another yarn to create some really interesting textures.  The Burlesque scarf is a new pattern for fall that calls for one ball of Ty-Dy Superkid and two balls of Wrapunzel.  (This pattern and the Wrapunzel are also in stock.)

Burlesque Scarf by Helene Rush

Get creative--we know you'll come up with lots of fun ways to use Ty-Dy Superkid!

Fall yarns from Manos del Uruguay

This is our favorite time of year at Sheepish--new yarns are arriving faster than we can tell you about them!  Here are two more recent arrivals for fall, both from Manos del Uruguay.

This beautiful stuff is Wool Clasica, a handspun, kettle-dyed, 100% wool yarn.  If you've never knit with handspun yarn before, you're in for a treat.  This yarn gives wonderful texture to your stitches, and knits up at about 3.5-4.5 sts/in. on a US 8-10 needle.  Wool Clasica retails at $17.50/skein for the solid colors and $18.50/skein for the multi colors.  The solids and multis both have the same yardage, 138 yds/skein.

Wool Clasica yarn from Manos del Uruguay

And here we have Maxima, a luxuriously soft kettle-dyed merino.  This yarn is so wonderfully bouncy and squishy!  It's a worsted weight, knitting at 4.5-5 sts/in. on a US 7-8 needle.  Maxima retails at $14.00 per 218-yd. skein, so it's a great value, too.  (The solids and multis are priced the same.)

Maxima yarn from Manos del Uruguay

Stacy knit up a quick sample of the Maxima, using the free Malabrigo Neck Thingie pattern from Ravelry (yes, Maxima is an ideal choice for any pattern that suggests Malabrigo Worsted!).  This is the Arctic Shadow colorway.

Maxima Neck Thingie

If you're not familiar with Manos del Uruguay and their yarns, you can read more about this certified Fair Trade company here. We're proud to carry these products, and can't wait to see what you all will make with them!

Dream Club: September

We're very excited to announce that Sheepish is now a member of Dream in Color's Dream Club.  Each month, Dream in Color will send us 10 skeins of a new, exclusive colorway--a different base yarn every month.  When you purchase a skein of this special yarn, we'll email you a PDF of that month's Dream Club pattern. Each pattern will be designed specifically to showcase that month's yarn.  Each month the base yarn, colorway, and pattern will be a surprise for everyone--including us!

September 2012 Dream Club yarn

Our first installment of the Dream Club is available now.  The yarn is Baby, a wonderfully soft superwash merino laceweight, dyed in a lovely periwinkle blue with streaks of gray.  It's a 700-yard skein for $24.00.  The photo really doesn't do justice to this colorway.

Twilight Accessories Set, exclusive pattern with purchase of September 2012 Dream Club yarn

With the purchase of the Dream Club yarn, you get the PDF of the pattern for the Twilight Accessories Set.  This set includes a hat, cowl, and fingerless mitts, designed by Andrea Jurgrau of Bad Cat Designs, and you can make all three out of one skein of the Dream Club yarn.

Remember, we only have 10 skeins of this yarn available (correction, nine skeins--someone's already bought one!) and you must buy the yarn to get the pattern.  We expect these to sell out pretty fast, so be sure to get yours before they're gone!

Holiday Knits 2012

We know many of you always look forward to the release of Interweave's annual Holiday Knits edition.  Well, the 2012 issue is here, and it's a good one!  Let's take a look at some of the highlights:

This little ornament, called Dansk Hjerte, features the simple palette typical of Scandavian colorwork.  You could make a bunch of these pretty quickly for last-minute gifts.  Their sample is shown in Nature Spun Worsted (one of our classic workhorse wools), but it would also be great in Cascade 220 or our new Perfection Worsted.
Dansk Hjerte by Ann McDonald Kelly

Those of you who knit for babies and kids will be very excited to see all the cute patterns for little ones in this issue, like the Little Mary Anning Set.  This is another worsted weight project that would be perfect in easy-care Perfection yarn.  (The set also includes an adorable hat, not shown in this photo.)
Little Mary Anning Set by Mary Ann Cunningham-Kim

For the men on your list, how about a luxurious scarf like the Lyle Muffler?  The reversible stitch pattern and size 9 needle make this a great choice for a special gift.
Lyle Muffler by Andrea Babb

Did we say gifts?  How about keeping some of these beautiful projects for yourself?  The Wobble Scarf looks like it would be fun and interesting to knit and would be the perfect way to knit up a skein of sock yarn, in case you're tired of making socks. :)
Wobble by Michaela Moores

If you're feeling more ambitious, maybe you'd like to knit some of the bigger projects in the issue, like the Road Trip Vest.  The vest is shown in Cascade Eco+ (our fall shipment of which will be here soon!), but we're thinking it would also be wonderfully warm and cozy in Lamb's Pride Bulky or Baby Alpaca Chunky.
Road Trip Vest by Deborah Newton
These are just a few of the dozens of inspiring patterns in this year's Holiday Knits. Also included in the issue are instructional articles on steeking, mosaic knitting, and double knitting.  There's enough in this magazine to keep you busy through the holiday season and beyond!

Done Roving yarns

Now in stock: two beautiful yarns by Done Roving, a small company based in Maine.  We'd never heard of Done Roving until a few months ago, but we instantly fell in love when our sales rep showed us her amazing samples.  We immediately placed an order for fall, and it has arrived!

Sheepish Summer Games Challenge

You may have heard of this idea before:  pick a project, begin it during opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics, then finish by the end of closing ceremonies.  We're putting our own twist on it: purchase your yarn (and hopefully your pattern too!) at Sheepish, simply finish before the deadline and you'll be entered to win prizes!

We've come up with three categories:
  • Small projects:  hats, scarves, baby sweaters, etc
  • Socks
  • Big projects: adult sweaters, blankets, etc
There is no judging--just stick to the rules and finish and you'll qualify for a drawing where we'll be giving away shop gift certificates and other goodies.  If you're not sure what category your project would fit in, just ask!  I'm sure we'll figure it out.

As an extra incentive, all cotton yarns are on sale 20% off, starting today!  If it's got cotton in it, it's on sale!

You must purchase your yarn at Sheepish to qualify for our prize drawing.

The Olympic games start Friday the 27th of July and end Sunday August 12th.  You've got a week to pick a project and then 2+ weeks to work on it.  Everyone likes to watch the games, now you can keep your hands occupied while you cheer on Team USA!

Stash Sale 2012

Our second annual Stash Sale is underway!  Thanks to all of you who came out last night to take advantage of the Preview Sale.  Everybody seemed to have a fun time and find some great bargains.

Is this a look of pure glee, or what?  Genevieve found plenty of goodies at the Preview Sale on Friday night.

Here's a shot of Irene, Lisa, Sara, and Stacy, enjoying some refreshments at the Preview Sale.  No, there's no problem with your computer monitor--this photo is a little blurry.  Photographer Carrie must have really liked that pink wine. ;)

We sold lots of yarn last night, but don't worry, there's still piles and piles of it here waiting for you.  Not to mention books, magazines, needles, and other gadgets, too!
