Sheepish Winter Games Challenge starts tonight

Is everybody ready? Tonight's the night! (If you don't know what we're talking about, or need a refresher about how this works, read this.) NBC coverage of the Olympic opening ceremony starts at 7:30pm. Of course, the ceremony will actually already be over by then. The time difference makes it tricky, but just use your best judgment. This event is pretty much on the honor system. :)

What are you all doing for your challenge? Here's a look at what your friendly Sheepish staff will be working on.

Carrie plans to dive headfirst into this double-knit colorwork adventure: The Null Hypothesis by Katrina Elsaesser. The Ravelry description says, "A six-foot long double- knit scarf with a non-repeating Mad Science themed pattern - but you don’t have to be crazy to knit this (or do you…?)." Hmm...we'll refrain from answering that question for now!

Meanwhile, Stacy will be tackling a spinning project. She started spinning this wool circa 2008 (!), with the idea of using the resulting yarn to knit a cardigan. She didn't get very far before life got in the way and the project got pushed to the far back burner. It's time to get back to this longstanding UFO and finally make it happen.

Let us know what your Winter Games Challenge project is! You can show us your progress by posting photos on our Facebook page.

Shop Hop prizes, part two

Shop Hop starts tomorrow!  Are you excited?  We sure are!

Here's a sneak peek at another one of the prize packs we'll be giving away.  This basket of goodies focuses on spinning.  If you've been thinking about giving this craft a whirl (haha), this just might be the perfect opportunity!  The spinning prize pack includes:

  • Top whirl spindle by Louet
  • High Whirling: A Spinner's Guide To An Old World Skill book by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts
  • 3.5 oz hank of hand-dyed extrafine Merino fiber from Manos del Uruguary
  • 4 oz. hank of hand-dyed Targhee fiber from Mountain Colors
The retail value of this prize package is over $80.

Remember, you don't have to visit all nine participating Shop Hop shops to win a prize.  Even if you only get your passport stamped at one shop, you'll still be entered into the drawing for lots of great prizes like this one.  But if you do get all nine stamps on your passport, you'll be eligible for the  Grand Prize--$100 in store credit to each participating shop.  That's $900 to spend on yarn, books, needles, patterns, whatever!

If you haven't picked up your passport yet, you can still get yours during the Shop Hop for only a buck.  We're looking forward to seeing lots of you during the Hop!

Spring Fling

We're gearing up for the first-ever Atlanta Area Yarn Shops Spring Fling!

Join the fun Thursday, March 29, through Monday, April 2. Each participating shop will be giving away a gift basket valued at $100. When you spend $25 at a shop, your name will be entered into the drawing for that shop's gift basket. If you visit the same shop and spend $25 on other days of Spring Fling, you can be entered again! Visit multiple participating shops to enter multiple drawings.

Since we're one of the few area shops that carries spinning supplies, our gift basket has a spinning theme. It includes: a handmade drop spindle from Twin Birch; the book High Whorling by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts; 4 oz. wool roving from Kraemer Yarns; 2 oz. space-dyed wool top from Louet; 4 oz. hand-painted Targhee top from Mountain Colors; and 8 oz. undyed wool roving from a farm in Fayette Co., Georgia.

We know a lot of you have wanted to give spinning a try, so this basket could be perfect for you! If you'd like to see a drop spindle in action, we'll be having demonstrations in the shop on Sat., 3/31, and Sun., 4/1, at 1:00 and 3:00 both days. We hope you'll stop by!
